Wasted Lives And Lost Souls

A life lived for self is a wasted life.

Mark 8:36: For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?

Geneva Bible Notes:

They are the most foolish of all men who purchase the pleasures of this life with the loss of everlasting bliss.

Matthew Poole:

There are many things which men value in proportion with their lives, their honour, estates, nay, many value their lusts above their lives; and Christ himself here teacheth us that his disciples ought to value his honour and glory, and their steady profession of faith and holiness, above their life, because he that will lose his life shall save it. The Fourfold Gospel Peter and the rest of the apostles had been thinking about a worldly Messianic kingdom, with its profits and rewards. Jesus shows the worthlessness even of the whole world in comparison with the rewards of the true kingdom. It is the comparison between the things which are external, and which perish, and the life which is internal, and which endures. External losses may be repaired, but a lost life can never be regained, for with what shall a man buy it back?

Burkitt:

Our Saviour had shewn in the former verses the great danger of seeking to save our temporal life, by exposing to hazard our eternal life. This he confirms in the words before us by a double argument: the first drawn from the excellency of eternal life, or the life of the soul: the second from the irrecoverableness of this loss, or the impossibility of redeeming the loss of the soul by any way or means whatsoever. What shall a man give in exchange for his soul? Learn 1. That Almighty God has intrusted every one of us with a soul of inestimable worth and presciousness, capable of being saved or lost, and that to all eternity. 2. That the gain of the whole world is not comparable with the loss of one precious soul; the soul*s loss is an inconceivable, irrecompensible, and irrecoverable loss.

Mark 8:37: Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?

Family Bible Notes:

In exchange for his soul; as the price of its redemption. If his soul be lost, there is no price which he can pay to redeem it. It must be lost for ever.

1 Corinthians 10:31: Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.

The ultimate and opposite of doing all to the glory of God is doing all to the glory of self.

Mark 8:35: For whosoever will save his life shall lose it; but whosoever shall lose his life for my sake and the gospel*s, the same shall save it.

Do you share the gospel or at least support those that do? Are you planting seeds? Are you watering them? Are you at the very least praying for the souls of the lost?
